The International Maritime Organization(IMO) has been enforcing stricter regulations on ship exhaust gases(SOx, NOx, CO2) to prevent climate change from 2020. Due to stricter regulations, orders for LNG-fueled ships are increasing, and the LNG bunkering market, which supplies fuel to these ships, is also expected to grow. Accordingly, by establishing an LNG bunkering Test & Certification center, we intend to strengthen the basis of the LNG bunkering system Test & Certification and the global competitiveness of the company.
The equipment of Test & Certification center is composed of engineering design & analysis software, loading arm package system test equipment, and several pieces of reliability function test equipment. The reliability function test equipment performs tests on key LNG bunkering equipment(QCDC/ERC, swivel joint, cryogenic hose) based on international regulations such as EN CODE and ISO, and the loading arm package system test equipment test/analyze various performance and safety phenomena of equipment in the state of motion of the ship at sea. In the future, by utilizing the established LNG bunkering Test & Certification infrastructure, the type approval and test operation data(Track Record) of key LNG bunkering equipment developed by domestic companies will be used to secure the credibility of domestic & foreign ship owners and ship builders. In the fiercely competitive LNG bunkering equipment market around the world, it will be an opportunity to revitalize the stagnant shipbuilding industry by installing domestic equipment and by securing the source technology for the core equipment for LNG bunkering. |

There is a large interest in the use of LNG as a marine fuel. In regard to conventional marine fuels, LNG reduces CO₂ emissions by around 20–30% (even compared to low-sulphur fuels), the almost complete removal of SOx and PM (Particulate Matter) emissions and a reduction of NOx emission of up to 85%, while emissions of CO₂ equivalents do not necessarily favour LNG. For example, the fugitive emission of methane during bunkering can bring down its environmental potential.
LNG is commercially attractive and available worldwide in quantities able to meet the fuel demand of shipping in the coming decades. The number of ships using LNG as fuel is growing rapidly. According to the figure 5 below, the global LNG fuelled fleet totalled 700 LNG fuelled vessels in operation, including LNG carriers and floating storage units and 400 LNG fuelled vessels are under construction by September 2021. In November 2020, EPS (Eastern Pacific Shipping) managed vessel “M/V CMA CGM TENERE” successfully carried out the company’s first liquified natural gas (LNG) bunkering during a scheduled port call in Rotterdam. The 14,800 TEU dual-fuel LNG Ultra Large Container Ship took on 10,600 m³ of LNG, which is enough fuel for a round trip voyage between Rotterdam and Asia. The LNG bunkers were pumped by the world’s largest LNG bunker vessel, Total’s “Gas Agility”. The entire bunkering process, which included a first-time cooldown, hose connecting and disconnecting, and pumping, took approximately 30 hours to complete, which was on time and as scheduled. Of these 30 hours, the LNG’s actual bunkering took roughly 10 hours, which was also on time and as expected. “M/V CMA CGM TENERE” subsequently proceeded to Southampton using the LNG to power the high-pressure MEGI engine onboard. This comes as the advantages of LNG as a fuel are being promoted in some quarters, notably low/zero emissions of SOx and NOx and lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to oil-based fossil fuels. |

Matteo Suzzani
Sales Director – LNG Systems Trelleborg Westbury ltd (KLAW LNG) After getting Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico of Milan University, Matteo has spent all of his career in technical and sales roles within the Oil and Gas industry. Firstly dealing with equipment and plants for natural gas as sales engineer, he has then developed a significant experience in the offshore industry as commercial coordinator in one of the division of Saipem-ENI (Italy). In the last 10 years he focused on fluid transfer solutions with an exciting opportunity to gain experience in the LNG transfer applications. Member of the BSI (British Standards Institution) he joins some of the ISO committees in charge to write standards for the LNG industry. He joined KLAW LNG (now Trelleborg Westbury) in 2017 and has been appointed Sales Director for LNG Transfer Systems since July 2021.
LNG Hose Transfer System technologies and applications have been developed in the recent years, to satisfy increase demand by the shipping industry, mainly for bunkering operations. Still a pioneer application up to 10 years ago, nowadays LNG bunkering via flexible hoses has become a common practice both in ship to ship and ship to shore configuration. Rapid demand increase paved the way for the blooming of various systems and different approaches.
Trelleborg has taken an active role in leading the LNG bunkering industry since its initial stage, as far as the transfer systems are concerned after having been involved in many LNG bunkering projects and with an unrivalled track record of thousands of operations conducted, we are now in position of identifying the key trends of this industry. Concepts like flexibility, efficiency, compatibility and availability have become paramount for any bunkering project, across its life cycle. The presentation will focus on identifying the characteristics that an LNG Hose Transfer system should have to match the above targets. Reference to case studies and applied technologies will be done, showing how the LNG bunkering via flexible hose has become a technically sound and commercially viable solution. ![]() |

Generally, fossil fuel power plants generate substantial amounts of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, which is considered to be the main cause of climate change. To reduce CO2 emissions in the power generation sector, ammonia co-combustion in conventional power plants, such as pulverized coal combustor, circulating fluidized bed combustor, and gas turbine, might be a promising solution. Also, ultra-super critical (USC) steam cycle can produce more electricity with the same amount of fossil fuels and ammonia and contribute to reduce the emission of CO2 and pollutional substances such as sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and fine dust. Therefore, ammonia co-combustion processes with USC steam cycle have been developed in the world. However, the aforementioned high-efficiency and environment-friendly technologies of power generation require additional equipment installation and technologies, which increase the initial investment cost. This study focuses on the economic feasibility analysis by comparing the cost benefits of the ammonia co-combustion power plants with a conventional USC steam cycle. Its economic feasibility was evaluated in terms of net present value (NPV), benefit/cost ratio (B/C ratio), and internal rate of return (IRR).

Hwa Lyong Lee has been working for various positions both in Korea and Norway in connection with ship design, rule development, hull approval and pre-contract/marketing and business development. He has also been a key player of the DNV Container Lift project, which was the very extensive campaign for container ships with rule modernization process and marketing activities through JIPs for 3 year period from 2008. During the period, DNV developed new rules, analysis procedure and software for containership design, which directly contributed to a drastically increase of DNV market share for containerships.
Before joining in DNV on 1998, he had been working as chief structural engineer for DSME in Korea more than 16 years. In DSME, he worked in the hull basic design covering from pre-contract process to basic design for hull key plans after contract. His long experience in one of the most recognized shipyards brought a lot solution-oriented input into DNV’s rule development process and enables him to build-up the network not only with shipbuilders but containership owners. He has been involved in many recognized/challenging projects both in the shipyard and DNV for design, approval and joint development projects. He had been working as project Director/containership since 2011 and took a head of pre-contract section in the following years until 2014. Since August 2014, he had been working as Key Account Manager(영업본부장) responsible for HHI group until end of 2016. From Feb. 2017, he has been responsible for business development(사업총괄 부사장) in DNV Korea/Japan until now.
Currently, the world fleet is mostly powered by diesel engines running on marine fuel oils. Decarbonizing shipping will require higher energy efficiency, improved logistics and new fuels. A misstep today in newbuild fuel strategies can have damaging consequences for businesses and assets in the future.
So, owners need practical, expert advice and smart solutions to ensure vessels stay competitive, compliant and commercially attractive over their lifetimes. We see strong growth in LNG as fuel for newbuilds in 2021 and this new trend is expected to continue at higher speed. There's a real need for strategic decisions that consider a diverse array of factors from cost, to fuel storage and propulsion, through to flexibility in design, strategic approach, and fuel ready solutions. And of course, all of this is underpinned by the need for managing risk and sustainability. ![]() |

Green ammonia, a carbon-free chemical, has been drawing much attention as a hydrogen carrier and carbon-neutral fuel for trading green hydrogen and building a carbon-neutral society, respectively, because it has higher volumetric hydrogen content and energy density than liquid hydrogen. And the infrastructure for storing and transporting ammonia is already in place. To implement green ammonia into the current energy systems, technologies on low-cost green ammonia production, decomposition, and utilization are essential. This presentation will show the current status and perspective on the development of low-cost green ammonia production and utilization.

He is also involved in Offshore Plant Design Forum as a steering committee member.
The ultimate goal of IMO regarding GHG is 100% decarbonization within this century. To achieve this goal, IMO has set up very challenging targets by 2030 and by 2050. As the first waves of IMO GHG regulation, EEXI and CII, were adopted in this year, environmental issues have now become one of the most important factors affecting the shipping companies' competitiveness. To satisfy with this regulation, various countermeasures such as speed reduction, energy saving devices, optimum operation, alternative fuels (LNG, Methanol) and finally zero carbon fuels (Ammonia, Hydrogen) would be considered. Eventually, shipping companies and shipyards should find out various optimal solutions considering uncertainty of IMO regulation, technical huddles, fuel price/infra and etc.

In Hyundai Heavy industries, as project manager, technical meeting for defining of scope of supply, definition of project planning, project execution and documentation of marine propulsion Sulzer/Wärtsilä and MAN 2S diesel engines, technical information to customers on IMO Tier I, II, NOx Technical Files and programming of the emission measurements results, environmental development and emission and performance testing of SCR, Water emulsion EIAPP certificate and group test for 4S engine and Himsen Engines as parent engine with classification societies and ship-owners. Engaged in development of dual fuel engines for 4S Himsen engines incl. engine modifications, assembly, testing and performance evaluations.
In Wärtsilä, as Head of Technical Yard support incl. 2S, 4S and Propulsion products, and project execution/management acc. to the guidelines of each role for contracted project and propose the solution as application engineering. In WinGD, Business developments, Marketing & application for 2S propulsion engines, for developing of product benefits/profits of operating profiles of the engines and environmental solution, Technical consultants to ship-owner, shipyards and engine builders, and contribution to make any solution proposal and idea for contract of new building project.
WinGD is continuously ensuring improvement of X-DF technology through reductions to both fuel consumption and
methane slip in gas mode, which is also considering by GHG working group in IMO, thus WinGD is launching X-DF2.0 technology with iCER – Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling. iCER comprises an add-on system which delivers enhanced combustion control through the use of inert gas. iCER technology offers the following customer benefits: • Reduction of energy consumption in gas mode by 4 %. • Reduction of fuel consumption in diesel mode by up to 5 %. • Reduction of methane slip up to 50 %. Exhaust gas is returned to the cylinder in a low-pressure path while in gas mode. The gas is cooled and then mixed with scavenge air resulting in C02 partly replacing the oxygen in the fresh air, acting as an inert gas on the combustion. The amount of returned exhaust gas and the combustion are regulated in a closed loop control. All current engines will remain within the WinGD portfolio, however the inclusion of iCER in the engine order designates the engine as X-DF2.0. The subject is related to reveiw and know about how to influence on engine performance from Low pressure iCER and High Pressure EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) on 2stroke Otto cycle duel fuel engine. WinGD is well positioned to identify those fuels that not only hold the promise of contributing to the decarbonisation of international shipping but are also fit for being applied on large seagoing vessels without impairing the health of the crew, operational safety and environmental impact. Through this investment WinGD continues to develop its engine technology to accommodate X-fuels well before the fuels become available in adequate quantities and at sufficiently attractive conditions for application in marine installations. And based on extensive experience acquired in recent years, WinGD has developed a comprehensive fuel validation process that provides a clear path towards release for application on WinGD engines for any developer or supplier of an alternative fuel. ![]() |

Major business :
LNG Private Investment Project - Future Food Energy Convergence Project (QSF(Quick Super Freeze)+Hydrogen fuel cell power generation+Smart Farm) - New Renewable Energy Convergence Theme Park(Indoor ski resort, Antarctic Experience Center, Ice Lantern Festival) - Urban regeneration Green new deal Energy Convergence project - LNG Mixer Truck(Reduced Fine Dust) - Public Health support(Vaccine Storage, Blood Reserve, Tissue Bank, Umbilical Cord Blood Storage) - Etc.(Ultra low temperature industrial equipment test, Storage of government and institutions' stockpiles)
Energy sources generated from LNG exist in various forms. However, the use of domestic LNG is limited to urban gas and power generation, while some developments have only recently begun through the government's hydrogen policy and carbon neutral policy. In particular, the use of cold energy of LNG liquefied for transportation can be one example of commercialization, other than other projects remaining at research levels.
LNG's energy sources can be fused with various items to discover various business models, and this presentation aims to present a wide range of cases through our business models that can be used by combining various types of business models, from cryogenic super freezing of food to urban regeneration projects, theme parks, and fine dust reduction. In addition, the main problems encountered in the commercialization of the business models will be shared to seek solutions and discuss additional problems. ![]() |

Due to the convenience of manufacturing and usage, plastics, which are used in many industrial sectors, are not properly treated after use, and are discharged without permission, causing a lot of damage to the ecosystem as well as human health. In Korea, plastic waste generation continues to increase due to changes in distribution and industrial structure despite regulations such as reduced packaging material use, single-use regulations, and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, consumption patterns have changed drastically, and the use of disposal products such as food packaging materials is rapidly increasing, but only about 35-60% of the generated plastic waste is sorted, recovered and recycled. Most of the remnants generated after sorting are either incinerated or sent to landfills, which causes secondary environmental pollution. In this case presentation, we apply cryogenic freezing and shredding technology using LNG cold energy to plastic waste that have been discarded after use and improve the recycling rate through efficient treatment and material recovery, as well as producing recycled plastic materials capable of up-cycling. We would like to introduce the eco-friendly comprehensive recycling center. The eco-friendly comprehensive recycling center converges state-of-the-art technologies such as cryo-fragmentation, air liquefaction, and fuel cell power generation technology for plastic waste using cold energy from LNG that was discarded into the sea. ![]() |
